- Leaking – If you notice any water damage in your home, such as stains on the walls or ceilings, it is a good sign that the roof is leaking. If the leak is a bad one, it is often best to get new roofing rather than have repairs done that may or may not last.
- Light Shining Through – Another thing you will be looking for in the attic are spots where outside light may be coming through. If you can see outside light, there is definitely a problem with the roofing, and you should call a contractor as soon as possible to find out if repairs can be done or if you should have a new roof installed.
Outside Your Home
The majority of things you need to check on your roof are on the roof itself. It is best to not go onto the roof unless you absolutely have to because of the many dangers involved. Instead, climb onto a ladder, and take a pair of binoculars. When you get to the top and can see the roof, use the binoculars to inspect all areas of the roof from where you are standing on the ladder. Some of the things you will be looking for include the following:
- Shingles – Look for damaged or missing shingles. Damage can include broken or missing shingles and missing granules.
- Signs of Wear – Inspect for signs of damage or wear around vents, pipes, chimneys, and other things that stick out of the roof.
